Initial Storm Motion in WarnGen
This page is featured as a quick highlight to how the initial storm motion in WarnGen products in AWIPS OB
3.1 are determined. In this AWIPS patch, the initial storm motion for WarnGen is calculated similarly to the storm motion in the 8-bit Storm-Relative Velocity Map (SRM) product, which is as follows:
-
User supplied
- Taken from the last run of WarnGen
- The average storm motion from the STI product of the nearest radar
The option utilized by WarnGen is the same option selected for the 8-bit SRM product GUI. The user should know that this GUI will not pop up when you open WarnGen. The user will need to manually select the GUI from the main D2D menu and edit the value selected to change the value of the initial storm motion.
Flash Flood Warning Storm Motions
Besides the initial storm motion, there is one other storm motion issue of note in the new version of WarnGen. When issuing a Flash Flood Warning, the storm motion listed in the product will have one of three formats:
- If no storm motion is provided, the product will say the storm is "OVER" the warned area (instead of over a point)
- If a slow storm motion is provided, the product will list the storm motion as "STATIONARY" but be described in reference to a point
- If a significant storm motion is provided, the product will list the storm motion in the same manner as all other products
