RDA/RPG Build 13.1 Training
Operator training to support the RDA/RPG Build13.1 deployment is now available. The timing and impact of this build is dependent on whether your site has been upgraded to dual-polarization technology (dual-pol).
The majority of WSR-88D sites are now upgraded to dual-pol, and the RDA portion of Build 13.1 is transparent for this group of users. Thus, this training explores the changes at the RPG that are operationally relevant.
For the NWS Redundant sites that have been recently upgraded to dual-pol, the RDA portion of Build 13.1 brings back the Clutter Mitigation Decision (CMD) and the Automated Volume Scan Evaluation and Termination (AVSET) algorithms. The WDTD's training on the "new" CMD and AVSET is available in the Build 13 Training release.
For those sites yet to be upgraded to dual-pol, RDA/RPG Build 13.1 will be available about four weeks following the dual-pol upgrade.
Most of the RPG Build 13.1 changes are adjustments to the RPG dual-pol algorithms. There is one improvement that is independent of the RPG dual-pol algorithms: the Two Dimensional Velocity Dealiasing Algorithm (2D-VDA). The 2D-VDA significantly reduces velocity dealiasing errors. If you are interested in more detail on this new algorithm, a reference paper is available.
The training presentation in streaming format is available from this page for DoD, FAA, and NWS partners who wish to learn about RPG Build 13.1. You have the option to pause the presentation at any time as you go through the material. The presentation takes 15-20 minutes to complete.
To receive credit on your transcript, you must complete the course in the NWS Learning Center. Use the button below to access the course in the NWS Learning Center.
NWS Partners can access this training from WDTD directly. You have the option of launching the presentation directly from our web site or downloading a copy for local viewing.
Budget cuts have made it impossible to provide the type of training document that has been provided with previous RPG/RDA build releases. For those of you who would like some kind of document, you can download a PDF of the RPG training presentation that includes the speaker notes.
WDTD welcomes your feedback on how well this training supported your understanding of the operational changes with RDA/RPG Build 13.1. Please send us your comments! Thanks!
