AWOC Instructional Component

IC Core 2:   Situation Awareness and Decision Making in a Warning Environment

General Information

Estimated Completion Time
2 hours
Description
IC Core 2 will focus on various aspects of decision making in the context of the operational warning environment. The topics will include definitions and examples of the three levels of situation awareness (SA) and how they are integrated into the decision making process. Failures of the three levels of SA will be presented with examples, as well as elements that contribute to SA failures. Finally, roadblocks to good SA ("SA demons"), and their impact on operations will be discussed.
Prerequisite(s)

IC Core 1, Optimized Learning

Lessons

Lesson 1: The Warning Process and the role of intuition
Description
Lesson 1 will first present the many elements within the warning environment, both meteorological and non-meteorological. Non-meteorological aspects discussed are human cognitive processing and its associated limitations. The differences between analytical and intuitive decision making follow, along with work environments that are more conducive to these different decision making processes.
