Long Pulse Mode Resolutions

The range resolution information from Section 5 applies to VCPs 11,12,21,121, 211, 212, 221, and 32 which operate in short pulse mode only. VCP 31 is a special case because it operates in long pulse mode. Since long pulses are ~ 1500 meters long, the best resolution available would be ~ 750 meters, 1/3 of the 250 m resolution used in short pulse mode. In order to generate products at the same resolutions as in short pulse, some interpolation technique must be applied to the longer pulses.

While in VCP 31, returned pulses are initially processed into 500 m increments along a radial. This process essentially overlaps the 750 m resolution information into corresponding 500 m bins. The result is an averaging of the data as the 500 m bins are processed, as in the top of Figure 15. The data values for each 500 m bin are then placed into the corresponding two 250 m bins.
