Introduction

The purpose of this module is to lay a solid foundation on which to establish the concepts that will be taught in later lessons. Although the physical principles discussed in this module are fundamental to all radars, the primary focus of this module will be on the NEXRAD WSR-88D Doppler weather radar.

As you progress through this module, you will learn how the radar operates internally, along with some of its limitations, which may have a direct bearing on how you interpret WSR-88D products. In some cases, these issues may play a significant role in your warning decision making process.
